A clogged gutter silently rots the wood that holds it in place

The fascia board runs along the roofline directly behind your gutters, and it's what the gutters are fastened to. When a clogged gutter overflows toward the house rather than over the front edge, water works its way between the back of the gutter and the fascia. Repeated soaking is all it takes — wood rot sets in quietly, hidden behind the gutter, while the outside of the board can still look perfectly fine.

As the fascia softens, the screws holding the gutter lose their grip. The gutter sags and pulls away from the roofline, and by the time it visibly separates, the rot has often already spread to the soffit or rafters. In Florida's rainy season, when heavy downpours hit a clogged gutter repeatedly over short spans of time, the cycle moves faster than in drier climates — damage that might take years elsewhere can develop in a single wet season.
